Images of hooded skinheads and football hooligans, sporting fascist signs, Polish flags and fireworks have dominated news headlines over the past couple of years; a symptom of the new climate of far-right nationalism under the ruling Law and Justice Party PiS. In Western narratives, Eastern Europe has often been characterised as a primitive and backward backwater. However, there is also a surprising history of black diaspora communities choosing to settle in Eastern European countries. During the 60s and 70s, a number of students from newly independent African states also came to study in Poland as part of a mutual cultural and economic exchange with the Soviet Union. Today, the 5, strong community of mainly West African migrants includes sporting and TV personalities, celebrities and models, and even has a Nigerian-Polish politician.

By Andy Dolan for the Daily Mail. Polish women become more promiscuous and more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviour after settling in the UK, according to a new study. The research suggests that young Polish women enjoyed four times as much sex after moving to the UK than they did in their strict Catholic homeland. And not only were they having sex more often, young Polish immigrants were often engaging in riskier activities such as group sex and swinging - and were more likely to cheat on their partner. Adventures overseas: Polish women become more promiscuous and more likely to engage in sexually risky behaviour after settling in the UK, according to a new study. Grazyna Czubinska, who carried out the study at the Polish University Abroad in London, said: 'What was surprising was that Polish women have sex four times more often than they would back in Poland. The study found that on average, the sexual practices of Polish women in the UK were at least twice as risky as what they would be involved in back home, and betraying a partner was far more likely, too. Miss Czubinska added that Polish migrants were also three times more likely to get or offer sex for favours - often in exchange for shared accommodation, cleaning or cooking. The research also found that 40 per cent of those who took part in the study were under stress and admitted experiencing 'strong states of nervous tension'. Dr Agat Smolen from Warsaw's Medical University, said the language barrier, financial problems and being separated from family or partners was often a contributing factor towards increased stress levels in migrants.

Women in Poland went on strike on Monday — shunning work, school and domestic chores — to protest against plans for a total ban on abortion in a country where rules on pregnancy terminations are already very restrictive. The proposal for the total ban on abortion , and the outrage it has sparked, are the latest example of deepening social tensions under Poland's conservative Law and Justice PiS party, which took power last year on a promise of more conservative values in public life. Thousands and thousands of people protest in Warsaw against Poland's plans for a total ban on abortion. The proposed legislation was put forward by a citizens' initiative and pushed by ultra-Catholic groups, gathering , signatures. On Monday, its advocates staged counter-protests dressed in white. But while many in Law and Justice profess a strong allegiance to the Catholic Church , they are divided over further restricting the abortion law. If approved, the total abortion ban could entail prison terms of up to five years for women seeking abortions and doctors who perform them. The proposal is now being examined by a parliamentary commission, which may yet amend it.
Blackface is a term used in the United States for a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person. The term is also used in some other cultures for black makeup worn as part of folk traditions and disguising , not all of which are perceived as or originated as representations of black people, and hence there is controversy over whether or not they are racist [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]. In the US the practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the " dandified coon ".
